National Commission orders refund of TV set cost
A TV, covered under a household policy, suddenly became non-functional. The
insurance company repudiated the familyís claim for reimbursement. The District Forum
turned down the claim and the State Commission upheld the Forumís order. What stand
did the National Commission take? The parents of Durga Dalal, who had bought a Sony
TV, claimed that the TV had suddenly become non-functional and hence the insurance
company was bound to reimburse the consumer on the basis of a household policy. They
submitted a claim for Rs.30,000 on the grounds that the TV had been completely
damaged. As the amount was not paid, they complained to the District Forum.

Mandatory standards for steel products from May
Standards for 17 steel products are to be made mandatory from May. These standards
are not formulated by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) but by committees consisting of
members from the respective industries, and technical experts among others. According
to Mr K. Anbarasu, Deputy Director General, BIS, Southern Regional Office, Chennai, the countryís growth process and achievements have much to do with the process of
standardisation of products. It helps to face internally the global competition, and find
markets outside for the products. So far, 18,000 Indian Standards have been formulated
and 90 of them relate to mechanical transmission
