Preamble:

The Tamilnadu Consumer Protection Organization Chennai, is a national, non-governmental Movement i.e., Voluntary, non-political, non-profitable, civic minded, Secular and registered Under societies Act.  This Organization is working for the promotion and development of Indian Citizens interest and their welfare.  This Organization was establishment in 2003 and it expanded its activities in various districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry, India.

This Organization is recognized by civil supplies and Consumer Protection Department Govt. of Tamilnadu the Motto of this Organization is to spread the news about the Public Welfare, Consumer Rights and Protection and make the Public to Protect from the unfair trade practices followed by many traders and unrecognized Organizations.  Since its inception, mere legislations cannot assure Consumer Protection.  In addition to legislation, Consumers should establish this Organization to fight against & unfair trade practices.  We are taking up such cases at the appropriate planning to widen the activities of this Organization at every nook and corner of the greater Chennai district in Tamilnadu, India.

Motto:

This Organization imparts training, research, education, Grievances and complaints, Vigilance, Counseling, Publication and Media, Public Meeting, Library Creating Awareness and Advocacy to all groups.  It build Linkages and work in partnership with Social Organization at grass root level to strengthen the common public in general and down-trodden and most backward communities in particular and empower then to participate through initiatives in socio-economic accountable, governances, gender equalization and ecological endeavors.  Further TNCPO strive to attain quality of life through Awareness.

Apart from rendering services towards to Lobby for changes in Public Policies and legislation for the Promotion of Human Rights, Health Awareness, and Protection we have been actively involved in many social Activities like Educational Assistance and bring up every people above poverty line and earn for its own living and to prevent them migrating to urban areas.

Organizational Structure

This Organization is a democratic set-up recognized by Government of Tamilnadu the General Body and Executive Committee the General Body and Executive Committee take policy decisions and the Management committee looks after the day today activities of the Organization.  To carry out the issues various directories Viz, Training Agriculture, Food, Women Concern, Public Utilities, Standards, Environment.  Self Governance, Health Memberships and Legal Areas have been created Training directorates and under take seminars, Work shops, campaigns etc.

Recognized and Affiliation

In recognition of Many Social Services rendered by this Organization since its inception, this Organization has been included to the Mailing list as an V.C.O’s Member in State Consumer Protection Council Tamilnadu, Chennai district Consumer Protection Council under the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department Government of Tamilnadu, Advisory Committee Member, Government General Hospital, Park Town, Chennai-3, Advisory Committee Member, Government Kilpauk Medical College & Hospital, Kilpauk, Chennai-10.  Management committee Member, Transport Department (New Prepaid Auto System) Advisory Committee Member, Chennai City Police Greater Chennai, Affiliation Member, Consumer Confederation of India (CCI), Advisory Committee Member Confederation of Indian Organizations for Service and Advocacy (CIOSA) Advisory Committee Member of TNEB, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, and Drugs Control Board.

Objectives (Registered under Societies Act) of TNCPO

  1. To promote a network of organizations working for consumer awareness and to protect the promotion of consumers’ interest.
  2. To strengthen the growth of the organized consumer movement in India.
  3. To resolve consumer issues and promote the rights and responsibilities of the consumers
  4. To promote through the purchasing power of consumers a “needs oriented development” that will ensure socio-economic justice and environmental quality of life for all.
  5. To identify issues and pool resources for campaign, lobbing and policy advocacy. To provide relevant and updated information.
  6. To liaison with the Government & non-governmental organizations.
  7. To educate the public about human rights, consumer rights, especially violation against women and safeguard their interest and anti- child labour.

  1. To organize and establish consumer clubs in various schools & colleges to create Consumer awareness.
  2. To educate the women folk to lead a peaceful and healthy life and to educate them in self- Employment.
  3. To work for ensuring basic consumer protection rights are respected everywhere and to provide socio-legal assistance to the victims of Consumer Rights Violations and to establish free advisory calls, offer legal consultancy and assistance to the helpless and
  4. To spread awareness by various among the people by various activities and assertive programme and spread the spirit of secularism, communal harmony and social peace.
  5. To encourage social action groups and concerned individuals to file public interest litigation. To lobby for changes in public policies and legislation for the promotion of consumer protection rights.
  6. To ensure that all the government plans and constitutional programme for growth and development are available to the eligible persons and needy.
  7. To bring together individuals, professionals, academics, social activists, institution and organisations and develop appreciation for observance of consumer rights values and standards and to build a strong network of consumer movement and to support consumer rights defenders.
  8. To operate, maintain ambulance services and hearse vans for public at all times and fully equipped rescue and relief force vehicles and medical team during natural calamities such as tsunami, earthquakes, flood, Inundation, fire, etc.
  9. To provide and help, self – employment schemes, vocational guidance and training, to personally visit families in need and suffering and to establish and give to the homes for the aged people and orphans etc.
  10. To register, write, publish, magazines, newspapers, periodicals, books.
  11. To bring about a friendly and unanimity among the members engaged in the association irrespective of caste, creed or colour on all subjects involving their common goods.
  12. To conduct seminars, camps and capacity building training.

Focus:

People Rights Protection Awareness Education should Focus on Specific issues like health, sanitation, nutrition, Food and Product Safety Pharmaceuticals, basic needs, environmental problems, market malpractices, finance Workers rights, unethical advertisement practices, culture and life styles, empowerment, networking.

Immediate Plan of Action

Consumer Protection and Public Welfare must be a Collective effort of the Citizens and the Government.  The success of this Movement depends solely on its ability to build a strong resistance against all kinds of exploitation.  It may be extremely difficult for Single Consumer to fight for his rights.  This Consumer Organization is the ideal set up to come together to provide collective resistance against all kinds of exploitation.

This Organization are setup to carry out specific functions.  The Common functions explained below,

It is consumer responsibility to assert himself and act to ensure that he gets a fair deal.  As long as he remain as a passive Consumer put it right.  One should value relationship with others in the community.  The consumer need to ensure that he do not compromise his culture and customs in getting a fair deal.

Programme Area

TNCPO undertakes independent action-oriented research on consumer problems and on various governmental policies affecting the interest of the consumers.

TNCPO monitor consumer’s confidence and satisfaction over services and products provided by public and private utilities providers such as telecommunication, energy, health, education, transport, water, public distribution system etc.,

TNCPO has been actively involved in programmes concerning the environment and elimination of plastic from day to day life, which is health hazardous.

TNCPO is committed to provide human rights education to children and adults.

TNCPO is providing legal aids to the affected consumers and it has filed many Public Litigations and other cases in the courts of law to safeguard the interest of the consumers and won many cases.

YES, Our Organization Activities would be confined to the territory of India.

Not more than 5% of the Income of the trust / Institution would be applied for any religions purposes, or given to religious institutions, (any) violation found will lead to denial of exemption under section 80G.  Considering the Trust as Public Religious in nature.

Yes Our Organization Promises that not more than that 5% of the income of the Trust / Institution would be applied for any religious purposes or given to religious / Institutions.

  • Unite them under one umbrella so that there is one National Level Organization for the Movement.

Achievement

  • This Organization formed voluntarily by the Consumers to protect their rights and Interests. Mere legislation cannot assure consumer Protection.  In addition to legislation, consumers should establish heir Organization to fight against unfair trade practices.
  • This Organization to protect the rights of the consumers and to promote social Justice and fairness in the market place, are explained below:-
  • Every week public Holidays and Government Holiday this Organization Office Bearers distribute the Awareness Pamphlet to the common public.
  • Receipt a consumer complaints to submit a concern Department through the state consumer protection council & redressal, of Law and Justice.
